中国历史上曾经有一位祖师普庵祖师,他发菩萨大愿,凡有安神、请佛、安宅、外出……等等冲煞禁忌之日,诵此咒一或三遍,即可百无禁忌。 家中蟑螂、白议、蚊虫、老鼠……等诸虫恼人,诵此咒可避之。 普庵,俗姓余,名印肃,号普庵,世居宜春县石里乡太平里,即今宜春市袁州区慈化镇余坊村。 唐时,精通风水的司马头陀和尚,曾到此地,并留下铃记云:南山有个七星嶂,亥脉宜丙向,面前峰秀似悬幡,佛祖不为难。 果然,宋徽宗政和五年(1115年)11月27日,余坊村一户余姓人家室内祥光烛天,隐现莲花,普庵出世了。 六岁时,其梦见有僧点其胸,醒来但见胸前有赤点大如樱桃,知非凡物,遂出家拜慈化寺正贤和尚为师。

一日,正贤授普庵《法华经》,普庵却说:诸佛玄旨,贵悟于心,数墨循行,何益于道!一番话显示出普庵对佛道与众不同的领悟。 据说,普庵之得道开悟从《华严经》而来,当他读至达本情亡,知心体合时,遍体流汗,豁然大悟,曰:我今亲契华严境界矣。 元代大诗人虞集游慈化,感普庵阅《华严经》而开悟,吟道:炉香满室雨垂帘,借得方床午睡酣,泉上老龙还记取,山翁曾此听华严。

普庵入主慈化寺是在宋高宗绍兴23年(1153年),但他并不常住寺内,往往藜权芒履,励精行道,四方来投者,随机诱引,得其心传而成正果者无数。

又好以异术神技为民众驱灾除病,故善声载道,名动禅林。

宋孝宗干道二年(1166年),普庵以原寺所处地气索莫难成气候,决定另择新址重建梵宇,一日来到南泉山,忽见一人身高八尺,红发披肩,苍髯掩口,普庵问:尔何方神祗?那人道:小神守护此地,候普庵僧五百年矣。 普庵笑道:贫僧正是普庵。 于是普庵在南泉山开基兴工建寺,两年后寺成,今日慈化寺址便是800余年前之旧址。

普庵善神术,屡屡为民禳灾去病,救旱抗洪。

南宋嘉熙元年,因祈雨封寂感禅师;淳佑10年,因救旱加封妙济禅师;因禳疫加封真觉禅师。

咸淳四年,又封昭赐禅师,大德四年,加大德禅师,皇庆元年加封慧庆禅师。

明永乐皇帝评说普庵:万行圆融,六通具足,端严自在,变化无方,哲学悟于群迷,普利益于庶类,如溥甘霖于六合,膏泽均沾,犹现满月于千江,光辉旁烛。

普庵其佛学功底亦不比寻常,一册《普庵语录》,明成祖朱棣叹为其精深也,非想象之可求;其神妙也,非虚空之可似。

明进士邹元标读之,认为其直接如来正宗。

普庵圆寂之前,曾花费5年功夫,刺血泥金,书写了一部《金刚经》。 这部供奉在慈化寺的血书《金刚经》与珍藏在临江慧力寺的苏东坡手书《金刚经》碑,都是江西境内极负盛名的佛寺镇寺之宝。 忏云老和尚对普庵咒的开示:南投水里的莲因寺忏云大师开示诵此咒常得吉祥、并除魔障鬼怪。
